I’m usually inclined to check out movies starring Liam Neeson, and my experiences with them have been mixed. This one falls somewhere in the middle of what I've seen from him. To be honest, I was hoping for more. The central plot is promising, but I wasn’t really excited by how it played out. More often than not, I felt annoyed by characters who didn't trust Bill and his awkward attempts to convince them he was on the side of good, as well as his efforts to manage access points. Considering he was an air marshal, he seemed surprisingly inept at the job. I understand he’s portrayed as a former drunk, but still… It remains a watchable film, moving along at a steady pace. I didn't feel the urge to pull out my tablet and distract myself while waiting for dull moments, which has happened with other films. It isn't really an action movie, though; the scene involving the poster is practically the only high-energy action sequence in the whole thing, and that was a bit of a letdown. There are some decent fights between Bill and various others, but I’d classify this as a thriller rather than an action film. I found the way the media behaved and how people seemed to be either controlling or failing to control things outside—or not controlling them—very frustrating. I would have definitely sued those media personalities after seeing how they openly smeared Bill and air marshals in general without any real evidence. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? Oh, right, it doesn’t seem to mean anything to today's media. Unfortunately, the thriller aspects weren't very thrilling either. I think this is because of Bill’s often clumsy approach. He never seemed particularly professional. The same goes for the police officer who was also on the plane; he acted more like a frightened member of some kind of gang than a trained professional. When the villain was revealed and the reasons behind everything were explained, my reaction was just “meh.” On the positive side, Liam Neeson delivered a solid performance given the type of script he was working with. Overall, it’s an acceptable movie that's worth seeing, but as I mentioned earlier, I had higher expectations going in.
