A disconnect exists, and it’s disappointing, when a title doesn't quite align with the film itself. The Korean title, 브로큰 (beurokeun)—Broken—perfectly encapsulates what the movie is about. It feels genuine. It communicates the central theme. It’s accurate. However, “Nocturnal” arrived as the English name. While it might seem sophisticated or even artistic, "Nocturnal" refers to a book within the narrative, not the story itself. This choice, presumably made with international audiences in mind, ultimately establishes an incorrect atmosphere and creates misleading expectations. If you anticipate a suspenseful thriller centered on nighttime contemplation, you’ll likely find that the final act seems to vanish. Had they retained “Broken” as the English title, the narrative's progression, its rhythm, and the conclusion would have made more sense. For what it is—a revenge thriller—the film does succeed. The performances are strong across the board, with a lead actor who embodies his character so completely that it feels like an extension of himself; he portrays a notorious gangster attempting to leave his past behind only to be pulled back in by the death of his younger brother. It shares similarities with John Wick—a figure both feared and respected, trying to live a normal life but inevitably drawn back into conflict. The difference is that instead of a dog motivating him, it's the loss of his sibling. The cinematography complements the film’s tone: mysterious, criminal, gritty, and appropriate for a revenge story.
