Reno on Nocturnal Animals

6/10 · Feb 26, 2017

I thought this movie was really great. I especially liked the story itself, though the way it looked wasn't quite my taste. I understood what was going on and found it enjoyable. The acting deserves recognition too; Jake and Amy were definitely the best parts of the film. It’s also nice to hear Michael Shannon received an Oscar nomination. The movie is based on the novel 'Tony and Susan', but the film’s title comes from a book featured within the story itself. This marks the director's return after a long break, and I think it was a worthwhile effort. The plot centers around a successful art gallery owner who goes through a divorce and then marries the man she was having an affair with while still married to her ex-husband. Her mother played a significant role in this decision. She believes she’s content now, but things change when her former husband sends her a copy of his newest novel, which is dedicated to her. As she reads it, she begins to understand the pain he experienced during their separation. After finishing the book, she discovers an unexpected truth that could drastically alter her life. It's structured as a story within a story—one fictional and one in reality—but the made-up tale has a strong impact on what’s happening onscreen, which I consider to be excellent writing. The original author deserves most of the praise. I’ve seen many revenge stories before, and while it shares similarities with 'Three Colors: White', this film offers a gentler form of retribution. That alone made the movie wonderful. The ending was also very well done. If you pay attention to what's happening, you will enjoy it. The technical aspects of the filmmaking could have been improved slightly. Aside from that, it’s definitely worth watching. _6/10_
