It's one of those films I wouldn’t consider for a top ten list, but it definitely earns a spot among my ten favorite comedies—favorites, not necessarily the best. I read Richard Russo’s novel which served as its basis. The initial portion of the book was quite good, featuring clever exchanges that made their way into the film. However, the latter half of the book felt slow to me. That isn't the case with the movie version; they chose a different resolution, and I think it was a smart move. Paul Newman is fantastic as always, backed by an excellent group of performers. Jessica Tandy, Melanie Griffith, and Bruce Willis are among those in the cast. There’s even a young Philip Seymour Hoffman, who I consider to be one of the most talented actors when it comes to completely embodying his characters. And isn't it refreshing to see a movie set in New England that isn’t based on a Stephen King story? It’s funny how reviewing older films like this makes me want to watch them again.
