I’ll admit, I'm drawn to revenge stories involving someone getting payback with the help of an unlikely ally, so it shouldn't come as a shock that I found this film entertaining. I’ve heard some people draw parallels between this and John Wick, but I don’t really see it. The core idea is similar, certainly, but beyond that, they feel like distinct movies within the same genre—or maybe even a subgenre. John Wick feels more polished, both in its protagonist's style and the overall setting with its hidden world. Also, John Wick’s action sequences are much grander. This movie’s lead character is rougher around the edges and seems more relatable than John Wick. The beginning felt a little slow, at least to me. A lot of it involves him just wandering around looking sad. He also takes an early beating, which had me wondering if I was going to enjoy this one. I got worried when he ended up getting tased—seriously? Thankfully, he finds his footing and things improve as the movie goes on. The latter part is really good, first when he relieves a criminal of a pile of stolen money, and then the final confrontation in a small workshop where Nobody has taken refuge with… well, I won’t say because that would ruin it; you need to see for yourself. The villain is genuinely effective—Hollywood hasn't done a great job creating memorable bad guys recently, but this one, a truly unsettling psychopath and Russian mobster, nails the part. If I have to nitpick something, it’s the detail about a 4.9-liter 1972 Challenger. I might be mistaken, but as far as I know, there was never a 1972 Challenger with that engine size (and a 4.9-liter engine isn't exactly impressive). Did a writer just throw out a random number? Regardless, it was a good movie—pretty enjoyable overall.
