Early on, the film includes a weather report playing over the car radio that predicts sunny conditions; however, those moments never arrive and sunshine seems largely absent from this narrative. The story unfolds against the backdrop of the dark, desolate, and wintry Isle of Lewis, where we encounter "Phil" (Bouli Landers), who works alongside "Brian" (Andrew Still). Brian is the grandson of the smallholding’s owner, “Angus” (Julian Glover). The two men form a decent connection while engaged in their mostly outdoor, often muddy work and also during drinks afterward, when Phil learns that Brian's aunt, "Millie" (Michelle Fairley), faces disapproval from other members of their close-knit community. It’s only after Phil experiences a stroke on the beach that Millie steps in to assist with his recovery, sharing a significant falsehood that shapes the remainder of the drama. The film progresses at a deliberate pace and features a rather underdeveloped storyline, but the performances feel authentic. The island setting and portrayal of a close family dynamic do contribute some depth to what becomes an increasingly foreseeable conclusion. I've had the opportunity to see Fairley perform onstage previously, and she’s capable of delivering understated acting; however, here there are simply too many extended scenes, driving around, smoking cigarettes with apparent significance—without adequately fleshing out the characters or clarifying why this originally Belgian visitor is present. The film is visually appealing, but ultimately rather forgettable.
