I want to state upfront that whether or not this film adheres perfectly to biblical accounts—and regardless of what religious fundamentalists have to say about its interpretations—is completely irrelevant to my assessment; it's simply not well-made. The initial portion of the movie wasn’t entirely unpleasant, and I even found some aspects enjoyable. The somber visuals occasionally created a striking beauty. I appreciated the inclusion of the watchers; they brought something extra to the film, and the action sequence involving Tubal-Cain's attempt to seize the ark was decent enough. However, things quickly deteriorated as Noah’s character became increasingly unstable and Tubal-Cain, who managed to survive, began manipulating Noah’s son Ham—though it must be acknowledged that Noah largely created this situation himself. The scenes where Noah contemplates killing his grandchildren, only to hesitate at the last moment, felt like a melodramatic trope from a daytime soap opera. And I won't even discuss the absurd sequence featuring Anthony Hopkins wandering around and gathering berries in a way that was frankly insulting. I didn’t fully grasp the reasoning behind the overwhelmingly negative reviews until I finished watching the film’s deeply flawed latter half, but now I understand them better. While I believe the one-star ratings might be overly severe, considering the movie's occasional beauty and the generally strong performances—despite the poor writing—the script ultimately undermines everything. It’s a genuine letdown.
