This film recounts a remarkable, factual account. While the direction seems disorganized, it’s evident that this was done deliberately to reflect the chaotic nature of the events as they unfolded. Pinochet came to power alongside other dictators who were put in place by the United States via the CIA. The reasons remain unclear, though it appears the previous Chilean president held progressive views which greatly angered some Americans. (Healthcare? That's socialism! It’s preferable for people to suffer or face financial ruin just trying to live.) Following this, America’s proxy then oversaw the killing and torment of numerous Chileans. There is a strong possibility that the U.S. provided instruction to those carrying out the abuses. The confirmed number of victims is 29,000, in addition to 3,000 deaths, along with an unknown quantity of "desaparecidos"—people who vanished without explanation. It would be helpful to view "Nostalgia de la Luz" beforehand; it offers insight into how Chileans feel about Pinochet.
