Eagerly awaiting some personal reflection. No Way Out comes from director Roger Donaldson and screenwriter Robert Garland, who adapted Kenneth Fearing’s novel "The Big Clock." The cast includes Kevin Costner, Gene Hackman, Sean Young, Will Patton, George Dzundza, and Howard Duff. Maurice Jarre composed the music, and John Alcott handled the cinematography. Previously filmed effectively as The Big Clock in 1948, Fearing’s clever original story is moved to a Pentagon setting and still manages to succeed. Those involved have added their own interpretation of the core narrative—a man discovering he's investigating "himself" during a murder investigation—and present a complex storyline that maintains tension until its conclusion. In classic noir fashion, the plot contains numerous misleading clues, lies, romance, and death, enhanced by political scheming. Costner and Hackman deliver excellent performances, although Young’s portrayal lacks energy for the important female character, and Alcott uses actual Washington locations to create a realistic feel for the story's environment. Jarre’s musical score feels out of place with the unfolding drama, and the final reveal remains as controversial now as it was when the film initially came out, but overall this is an excellent noir remake that will appeal to fans of neo-noir films. 8/10
