The film unfolds during a hectic Christmas season complicated by looming job cuts from the bank's parent company, as Northern Bank manager “Murray” (Eddie Marsan) also deals with marital problems stemming from his constant work focus, much to the frustration of his wife (Eva Birthistle). Simultaneously, "Barry" (Éanna Hardwicke), a cheerful bank employee, is often seen casually carrying the vault keys while socializing. These two men have a strained relationship, but they must find common ground when terrorists invade their homes and hold Murray’s wife and Barry’s asthmatic mother hostage. The demand: assist in an elaborate robbery of tens of millions of pounds or face dire consequences. Both men are resolute in protecting their families, yet Murray harbors suspicions about Barry's potential involvement due to a shared history rooted in the Troubles, which fuels a lack of trust between them. Adding another layer of difficulty is security chief “Mags” (Michelle Fairley), whom they must outsmart to successfully move a large sum of cash past the bank’s extensive CCTV system undetected. The story draws from a real-life incident, so the outcome is predetermined; however, this doesn't detract significantly from the experience, as Marsan and Hardwicke bring their characters to life with believable fear and mistrust, while director Colin McIvor maintains a brisk and straightforward narrative. A sense of threat permeates the film, but the unreliable telephones used by the perpetrators keep them at a distance, avoiding any need for physical violence—instead, it’s a terror that operates on a more psychological level. While perhaps not essential for a big-screen viewing, it's definitely worth seeing.
