The idea of some kind of manipulation felt off, I didn’t really pick up on that from the film. However, it was unsettling to see parents essentially bribe someone to... well, you know... be involved with their son. Sadly, it just doesn't click; Jennifer Lawrence is simply unlikeable in this. She’s a terrible person throughout most of the movie, and for the story to succeed she needs to be appealing. She has to feel familiar. She should come across as someone the male lead would genuinely want to be with... Instead, she comes off like someone you'd actively avoid. She isn’t even an amusing trickster; not a charming swindler. She’s just completely unattractive. And that’s why the film falls flat. Andrew Barth Feldman seems truly uncomfortable in social situations, but he also projects a sense of wanting to keep his distance from her because of her toxic personality traits. The writing does acknowledge this... but then abruptly changes course, forcing him to pretend he enjoys being around her... because the story demands it. For some reason, his reluctance to be intimate with her is attributed to his own awkwardness, not her unpleasant nature. This makes things feel a bit unrealistic. I think their attempt to demonstrate that Jennifer doesn’t need a man caused them to create a character no one would want to spend enough time with to... you know. If they had portrayed her as someone who at least considered the impact of disrupting young children's lives, it might have been successful. Instead, they opted for complete lack of charm.
