No Good Deed isn’t really a bad movie; it adheres closely to a standard structure and includes all the necessary elements—no matter how improbable—for a home invasion story, and manages to do so adequately. The issue is that there's nothing fresh or original here for anyone familiar with films from the eighties and nineties. The nineteen nineties were a particularly fertile period for this kind of thriller, where some disturbed individual – male or female – would intrude upon the life of an ordinary person and then inflict mental torment on them. Sam Miller’s film feels like a careless rehash of stories that came long before. Only he and those who financed it seem to believe that centering the narrative around black characters somehow makes it more exciting. It doesn't achieve that. Idris Elba is a capable actor (and, as always, in excellent physical condition), and Taraji P. Henson delivers a strong performance, but the weak script holds them back; even an intended plot twist suffers because of how recognizable everything is. If you’re young enough and fortunate enough to be experiencing this type of thriller for the first time, it might work, it really could. But those who have seen many films will likely find themselves bored to the point of falling asleep. And that isn't meant as a put-down. 4/10
