I saw this one with some friends, and I’m glad I didn’t pick it myself. It wasn’t terrible, but it also wasn’t particularly good. The beginning is promising, but then questions and theories start to arise, only to have the ending offer no resolution or explanation. The film opens with a father, Michael, and his daughter, Karen, spending a weekend together, which goes sideways when they experience car trouble and become stranded. Rather than accepting defeat, they decide to try an escape room, where they encounter the other characters. There’s Tyler, who spends the entire time on his phone, and Melanie, his girlfriend, attending because it's her birthday and she enjoys escape rooms. Andrew is present seemingly because his therapist suggested he socialize more. Josie runs the escape room, and the inventor is the man who built the mansion for reasons that remain unclear. That’s pretty much all you learn about these characters; there’s no backstory or history provided. There's no character development to be seen, nor are any relationships established or strengthened. A strange attraction or tension develops between Andrew and Karen, which feels odd given her age and his apparent post-high school status. The acting isn’t impressive, but I don’t think it’s the actors’ fault; it seems like a problem with the writing. The script had potential to be much better. There were some interesting ideas—like Melanie's phone call, the painting, the morgue scene, and the time loops—but none of them are explained or connected in a way that makes the film work well. It just felt like random scenes and concepts thrown together without any unifying element. I held out hope for an ending that would tie everything together (those are usually my favorite kinds of movies or shows), but ultimately, nothing made sense. There were also some genuinely suspenseful moments, and the special effects were decent. Ultimately, it was a passable viewing experience. If you’re looking for something undemanding with a few scares, you might find it enjoyable. Just don't expect too much, and be ready to feel confused because there are no answers provided.
