This movie turned out to be surprisingly good, especially considering Oliver Stone directed it. You’d think it might descend into a chaotic portrayal of paranoia, but it was handled skillfully. Hopkins gave a strong performance as well—though he seemed a bit too aged for the part, he managed to convey many of Nixon's characteristic gestures and speech patterns. It wasn't a perfect imitation, but he really got at the heart of the character, which is almost preferable to an exact replica. Joan Allen’s work didn’t quite measure up, though. Her portrayal of Pat seemed off, leaving the impression that she hadn’t fully grasped the person she was meant to be representing. There were also some brief references to theories surrounding the Kennedy assassination, and while I personally find those theories compelling, I don't believe they belonged in a film about Nixon. They felt out of place, like something from *The X-Files*, and made you question whether that particular exchange actually occurred. Despite these issues, it appears to be an excellent movie—one that was treated with fairness—about someone who could have easily been reduced to a simple caricature. Stone brought humanity to the character, which required both courage and skill.
