Avoid seeing this film if you’re already down, as it won't offer any real comfort. *Nineteen Eighty-Four* depicts a grim world drawn from an equally dark book—a truly unpleasant totalitarian state. While the methods of manipulation go beyond simple repetition of falsehoods, involving actual alterations to historical records in newspapers, it remains disturbingly reminiscent of what’s happening now. The performances are strong and the limited color palette works well, but I noticed some gaps; certain aspects seemed more developed in the original story, perhaps. I'm interested in reading the book to see how it compares, as I understand the film sticks fairly closely to its storyline. It would be interesting to learn about the other societies involved, particularly those they are supposedly fighting or cooperating with, but I suspect the novel focuses solely on this oppressive and thought-controlled environment. It's definitely worth a viewing, just not when you’re vulnerable—like late at night after a breakup and job loss.
