Drawing from George Orwell’s bleak novel written in the nineteen forties, the film adaptation arrived in 1984, precisely the year Orwell envisioned. Disturbed by the terrible acts committed by Germany and Russia, and worried that England and America could follow a similar path, Orwell created a disturbing depiction of complete authoritarian control, and the movie remained true to his vision. Specific elements included: (1) Constant monitoring, achieved through cameras concealed within television screens. (2) Crumbling buildings and poorly made goods resulting from the Party’s control over the economy. (3) A constructed language, NewSpeak, which was filled with indirect ways of referring to what the government did. (4) An unforgiving system of justice where even being suspected of disloyal thoughts could lead to severe consequences. The film features John Hurt portraying a mistreated insurgent, Susanna Hamilton as his lover, and Richard Burton as the government representative they place their faith in. (Similar to Orwell, Burton was seriously ill during filming and passed away before the movie’s release.)
