It strikes me that those who now create what they consider empowering portrayals of women might learn something from a film like this. Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton play three professional women at different levels within a company, overseen by their womanizing boss, Dabney Coleman. At first wary of one another, they find common ground through Tomlin’s son’s marijuana use and resolve to deal with things themselves. The result is often genuinely funny as they outsmart and get even with their clueless employer. It's certainly not a nuanced film, but it shows that cleverness and cunning are sufficient to accomplish what they want, without resorting to violence, revealing clothing, or constant profanity. The theme song isn’t bad either.
