A group of researchers—a professor, played by Jack Starrett, and several graduate students including Elizabeth Kaitan, Clayton Rohner, and Alisha Das—go to an old mining house high up on a mountain near Los Angeles to investigate paranormal activity. The question is whether they’ll survive the unsettling events that unfold. Brian Thompson appears as a tough character. "Nightwish," from 1989, mixes elements of a remote cabin story with haunted house movies and shares visual similarities with "Re-Animator" (1985). This connection makes sense since art director Robert A. Burns contributed to both films, along with “Tourist Trap” (1979) and the highly regarded “The Howling” (1981). Elizabeth Kaitan is attractive; viewers familiar with horror may recognize her from "Necromancer" and "Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood," both released in the prior year. The movie tries to incorporate subconscious dream exploration, a spooky ghost story, and the chance of encountering unknown beings from outer space—and it feels scattered as a result. However, there are some genuinely effective moments, and it’s enjoyable if you appreciate any of the films mentioned. "Pumpkinhead" (1988) provides another point of comparison regarding atmosphere and overall feel. The film's length is 1 hour and 32 minutes; filming took place at Zorthian Ranch in the hills north of Pasadena, with interior scenes filmed on sets constructed within a Los Angeles warehouse.
