The film doesn’t do a good job of explaining its setting, either presenting those details when they’re needed or leaving them out entirely. Because viewers aren't given enough context, the early parts of the story don’t manage to create any real emotional impact. Ultimately, what remains is an admiration for the strange and imaginative atmosphere and the considerable technical skill involved in bringing it to life on screen. (A few people will probably also notice how good-looking the main character is.)
