A sad event unfolds on an American train carrying only a handful of people on Christmas night. The conductor, played by Danny Glover, along with two other passengers—Leelee Sobieski and Steve Zahn—devise what seems like a good idea to enhance their circumstances, but they quickly discover how misguided it is. Matthias Schweighöfer appears as the conductor's assistant. “Night Train” (2009) is a suspense/thriller that unfolds almost entirely on a train. The basic premise echoes “Terror Train” (1980), though this isn’t a slasher film, despite some elements of that genre. It feels more like something from Hitchcock's catalog and is definitely engaging. It has similarities to "A Simple Plan" (1998), but set on a train, with the addition of a MacGuffin and a supernatural component. In my view, the movie would have been stronger without that mystical aspect. Despite those shortcomings, and the use of somewhat unrealistic computer-generated imagery depicting the train moving at 200 MPH (which didn't detract from my enjoyment), “Night Train” is an enjoyable experience largely due to Leelee Sobieski’s exceptional performance. It doesn’t reach the heights of “Runaway Train” (1985) or even match the quality of "Horror Express" (1972) and "Train" (2008), but I would place it on a similar level as "Beyond the Door III" (1989) and “Howl” (2015). Even though it’s a fairly disposable movie, it provides what it promises if you're looking for something involving trains. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 31 minutes, and was filmed in Sofia, Bulgaria. GRADE: B-
