“Night Swim,” the initial significant release of 2024, arrives aiming to replicate the success Blumhouse experienced with films like “M3gan” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s.” Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon lead the cast as Ray and Eve Walter, a couple navigating parenthood while dealing with Ray's M.S. diagnosis. A former Major League Baseball player, Ray maintains hope for recovery and a return to his career despite doubts from those around him. His life on the road previously led to missed milestones, including the birth of their daughter, and created distance between him and their son. Eve’s new position at an elite school provides the family with necessary insurance coverage for Ray and allows her to work toward completing her degree. Seeking stability and a therapeutic outlet, the family chooses to buy a house with a pool instead of renting. The discovery that the pool is fed by a natural spring further appeals to Ray, who believes it's accelerating his recovery. However, the situation isn’t as simple as it appears; the pool harbors dark secrets spanning decades, and the family soon confronts forces beyond their understanding while fighting for survival. The movie presents an intriguing concept, though I occasionally drew comparisons to other films, and some of the startling moments didn't resonate with me as strongly as they seemed to with others—I don’t typically jump easily from scary movies. The acting was solid; however, at times I felt less invested in what happened to certain characters and more focused on understanding the supernatural aspects driving the story. Regardless, it proved to be an enjoyable experience, offering a departure from typical horror films featuring monsters or killers. Co-Writer/Director Bryce McGuire effectively adapted his short film into a horror movie that delivers enough of what its audience expects. 3 stars out of 5
