This movie will get to me, I swear it. Night Must Fall, directed by Richard Thorpe and written by John Van Druten from Emlyn Williams’ play, features May Whitty, Robert Montgomery, Rosalind Russell, Merle Tottenham, Alan Marshal, Matthew Boulton, and Kathleen Harrison. Edward Ward composed the music, and Ray June handled the cinematography. When the wealthy but difficult Mrs. Branson (Whitty) brings Danny (Montgomery), a charming but enigmatic handyman, into her home, her niece and companion Olivia (Russell) grows wary of his intentions. Williams’ play—he originally performed the part of Danny onstage—makes for an unsettling and rewarding adaptation, resulting in a genuine thriller that feels even better thanks to its black-and-white classic film style. From the very beginning, with the knowledge that a murderer is on the loose, director Thorpe makes sure the main characters are fully developed. He needed to do this because the movie runs close to two hours, but it never drags. This is largely due to Montgomery’s performance. MGM executives were concerned about casting Montgomery in the lead role, as he was known for lighter parts, but producer Hunt Stromberg insisted and was proven right when the film became both a critical and popular success. Montgomery (nominated for an Oscar) delivers a fantastic performance; his portrayal of Danny combines childlike playfulness with sinister hints—capped off by a gripping final half-hour. Whitty (also nominated for an Oscar) and Russell support Montgomery well, the former wonderfully grumpy but softening under Danny’s influence, the latter deeply troubled as the plot thickens. This is strongly suggested to anyone who enjoys classic films, particularly those suspenseful “Gaslight” style thrillers where a woman might be in danger and the hero may not be what he seems... 8/10
