“Foon” (Dayo Wong) finds himself overseeing the final remaining grand clubs in Hong Kong, but things aren't simple. The clientele has become more discerning with their drinking and romantic pursuits, and his dancers are aging out of favor with those paying for their services, making him feel like the end might be near. This feeling intensifies when “Madame V” (Sammi Cheng) makes an agreement with “Prince Fung” (Chun Yip Low) to purchase the club upon its elderly owner’s passing. They share a history, and she doesn't hesitate to discard him and his dancers until she realizes that this young prince intends to swindle her, bankrupt her, and acquire the club at a ridiculously low price. Suddenly needing each other, she must put aside their past issues and join forces with “Foon,” his girls, and his memorable assistant “Turf” (Yeung Wai-Lun - who brought Peter Lorre to mind) to orchestrate an elaborate scheme that will save their livelihoods, the club itself, and publicly humiliate the ambitious "Fung" in a way that goes beyond financial loss—namely, by embarrassing him in front of his wealthy father. As they develop their plan, it becomes clear there's no shortage of people eager to participate – from questionable millionaires to lawyers and even the man’s own girlfriend, all wanting a piece of the action. However, "Fung" isn't easily fooled, so caution is essential. While the film does run a bit long, I found it enjoyable watching “Foon” and “Madame V” move from outright hostility to becoming partners. Once the stage is set for their deception, the movie moves along at a good pace with some misleading clues, displays of loyalty, plenty of alcohol, and some truly awful, pointy red shoes that almost make the ancient practice of chanzu seem attractive. The production has style, incorporates silly jokes, and conveys the idea that many women involved in the adult entertainment industry are far from helpless victims. It may not stick with me for a long time, but it provided quite a bit of amusement.
