The movie opens with some appealing jazz music, but what follows proves to be a fairly ordinary crime story. The narrative kicks off when a drug seller fatally shoots three police officers and then makes an escape in one of their vehicles. Following this, the District Attorney, "Morgie" (Ron Liebman), declares that the person responsible will be prosecuted by the recently licensed attorney—previously a cop himself—who is also the child of an officer severely hurt during the initial attack. This son, “Casey” (Andy Garcia), experiences some rather unbelievable circumstances and suddenly finds himself confronting the killer in court, only to then become DA and get involved in an inquiry regarding police corruption that could potentially impact his own family. Frankly, I thought the whole setup felt contrived. It all seems a little too pleasant, and the initial courtroom scenes—which also include Richard Dreyfuss—are genuinely disappointing. The storyline is convoluted, and the final resolution really falls short of anything substantial. While it’s visually appealing and the music contributes to an atmosphere that portrays New York as gritty and corrupt, Garcia doesn't quite possess the necessary authority for this role, nor does Ian Holm (his father, “Liam”) deliver a particularly memorable performance. It’s suitable viewing on television during a gloomy winter night, but not much more than that, I regret to say.
