It’s decent, although a bit more finesse would have been welcome. *Night Crossing*, the movie telling the factual account of an East German hot air balloon escape, proves to be a production that is both engaging and features strong performances. Still, there’s nothing about it that really keeps you guessing. While predictability isn't inherently bad, I feel it holds this film back. Knowing what happened, seeing the names mentioned in the opening credits, or simply following the narrative—it’s simple to figure out where things are headed, which results in a rather slow progression, particularly during the initial and central parts of the story. Despite that, the ending is uplifting because of its positive tone and thanks to the cast delivering good work. John Hurt, playing Peter, stands out as being the strongest performer, with those around him contributing effectively. Günter Meisner, who played Mr. Slugworth, also has a role. It’s peculiar that some characters speak with British accents while others have German ones; it seems like the filmmakers should have chosen just one accent for everyone. I can't remember ever hearing about this real-life event before seeing the film, which is surprising considering I know of other stories concerning similar situations. Regardless, it’s a worthwhile movie.
