Alexandre Aja’s Never Let Go is a suspenseful survival story that mixes horror with complicated relationships within a family. I found watching it to be captivating and disturbing, as the movie skillfully creates tension from beginning to end. The narrative centers on a mother and her two sons who are forced to protect themselves against something terrible endangering their house. The feeling created is eerie, complemented by striking imagery that amplifies the sense of fear. Aja’s work directing establishes an uncomfortable reality which had me very invested in what would happen next. Although the acting is good, especially from the woman playing the lead, I thought the movie faltered a bit toward the end. The suspense lessened then and some aspects of the story seemed foreseeable. Nevertheless, the emotional heart of the film—the connection between a mother and her children—really affected me. In conclusion, Never Let Go presents an interesting combination of horror and dramatic elements, making it worth seeing for people who enjoy that type of movie, even if it doesn’t completely take advantage of its initial promise. It made me consider how far someone might go to safeguard the people they care about.
