Following an incident where journalist Paul (played by David Arquette) transports the wounded "King David" (DMX) to a hospital, he’s unable to prevent the man's death. In the process of these events, Paul ends up with King David’s vehicle, which contains audio recordings detailing the deceased’s life as a minor drug distributor. The narrative doesn't present anything particularly fresh; the character portrayed by DMX is unlikeable from his introduction—particularly when he manipulates his girlfriend into using heroin simply because she resists moving in with him. The film has a rough quality, and there's a sense of realism to how this person lived: exhibiting thoughtlessness, selfishness, ruthlessness, and deceitfulness. Simultaneously, the story also includes Michael (Michael Ealy, who delivers an adequate performance), whose focus is on exacting revenge for the killing despite his own moral character. Many musicians have attempted to transition into acting, with limited success. Even though the script contains some dialogue that isn’t as simplistic as I anticipated, DMX seems overly reliant on his established persona and charm—attributes he certainly possesses—instead of attempting to bring depth or nuance to a character about whom I felt no connection. His narration occasionally offers clever observations, but despite the frequent depiction of realistic drug use, the film moves at a decent clip, though it’s ultimately quite unremarkable.
