Peter Finch gives an outstanding performance as the television news anchor ("Beale"), who, after learning he was about to be dismissed, announced his intention to shoot himself on live television. Surprisingly, he was invited back the following night and proceeded to tell viewers they’d had enough of complacent government and corporate excess and needed to get off their couches. His long-suffering supervisor "Max" (William Holden) wants him to receive medical attention, but the driven public relations executive "Diana" (Faye Dunaway) recognizes a chance within this newfound fervor and persuades the station’s new owner "Hackett" (Robert Duvall) to replace “Max” with “Beale,” granting him his own hour-long news program featuring a resident fortune teller. At first, it seems unbelievable, but in keeping with television conventions, it gains traction; viewership increases, advertisers are pleased, and the news division is finally profitable! However, can this last? "Beale" is completely unmanageable, and no one – even his own network – is safe from his tirades. Eventually, he's bound to go too far, and then the consequences will be dramatic. To be frank, I felt the narrative became increasingly unbelievable as the important themes of greed, corruption, and prioritizing success were overshadowed by a finale that was rather absurd. Nevertheless, the film isn’t really about the plot itself but rather the acting from Finch, Holden, and Dunaway, who frequently steals scenes with sharp, well-delivered speeches. Even after nearly fifty years, it remains relevant as discussions regarding genuine journalism versus commercial interests continue without any clear resolution. It also offers a pointed critique of viewers – those who consume television news only when it confirms their existing beliefs. I would have appreciated more screen time for Finch, but overall this is an engaging and insightful portrayal of human motivations—or lack thereof.
