This collection of tales inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, presented under the title The Book of the Dead, feels like a project with limited resources; there's not much depth or intricacy to be found, and without the graphic content, it could easily pass for something produced specifically for television. Despite this, I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. The performances are exaggerated, which lends an odd, dreamlike feel to the proceedings—Jeffrey Combs is particularly skilled at overacting—and the gore effects are appropriately visceral. The creatures themselves certainly capture that Lovecraftian essence, Cthulhu among them. It proved to be a diverting experience.
