It's an enjoyable fantasy story that works perfectly well without prior knowledge. The sacred lotus introduces reincarnation into the plot, but will it happen quickly enough to protect the people of “Chentang Pass” from the approaching army of devils emerging from lava? As a seemingly inevitable loss appears on the horizon, the immortals begin to get involved—the narrative echoes the siege of Troy in some ways, and like those ancient tales, there’s plenty of deceit and betrayal alongside familiar themes of loyalty, family bonds, and working together as the story moves toward an intense finale. The computer-generated imagery surpasses what's typical, offering a visually rich experience, and the action sequences are plentiful while the earnest young “Nezha” must discover his purpose and navigate his connection with the more straightforward “Ao Bing,” all while influenced by the distant dragon kings and constantly observed by “Wu Liang”—a character who appears kind and generous but perhaps hides something behind that beard. If you examine it closely, there’s a potential commentary on contemporary China—or possibly many other cultures—where those less powerful are exploited and mistreated, where the importance of family is diminishing, and where wealth and influence hold sway. Ultimately, I considered it a well-made animated film combining the incredible depth of Chinese mythology with a strong adventure story and touches of lighthearted humor. It’s best experienced on a big screen, and it immediately launches into exciting action, maintaining a good rhythm throughout its two hours.
