A nuclear weapon ends up in the possession of a neo-fascist extremist with plans to create conflict between the United States and Russia, leading to an unimaginable situation. "The Sum of All Fears," adapted from Tom Clancy’s novel (2002), casts Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan, who transitions from CIA analyst to operative; Morgan Freeman portrays his superior; and James Cromwell appears as the president. There are other recognizable actors involved, including Sven-Ole Thorsen. I've watched only one previous Jack Ryan film featuring Clancy’s work, “Patriot Games” (1992). It wasn’t bad, but this movie is definitely an improvement; it's really quite good. It's a believable international political thriller that illustrates how precarious the world situation is and how easily things could escalate. The story benefits from some well-placed humor and understated comedic moments. The film has a running time of 2 hours and 4 minutes, and takes place in numerous locations. GRADE: A-/B+
