John Chard on Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger!

6/10 · Dec 31, 2016

The movie plays it safe, and doesn’t stray from what works. Following the positive response to Nativity! in 2009, it seemed inevitable that more films would be made, beginning with this sequel. The basic structure stays consistent with the original; David Tennant is here—a real win for writer and director Debbie Isitt—playing a stressed teacher leading children on a journey toward the National 'Song for Christmas' Competition. Alongside him, Marc Wooton reprises his role as Mr. Poppy, a mischievous character who adds humor and emotional depth, along with a group of charming kids certain to evoke feelings of warmth during the holiday season. This is clearly Isitt’s work, and that’s both good and bad. While the competition finale has a fresh element compared to the first movie, it ultimately feels like a repeat—and that's because it essentially is. A further issue arises in the final third, which is overloaded with entries for the competition song. The songs and routines are well done—Isitt and editor Nicky Ager collaborated on the writing—and offer an enjoyable mix of musical styles. However, at some point, it feels like unnecessary material added to extend the film beyond 100 minutes, causing the comedic human elements to become less prominent. Despite this, it remains a heartwarming movie that’s easy to enjoy and sing along with during Christmas. It earns a rating of 6/10.
