Dylan (played by Charlie Plummer) shares a home with his mother, younger brother, and works odd jobs in construction to help support them. His life takes a turn when he finds employment hauling equipment for a traveling rodeo circus—a group of hopeful cowboys. What sets this group apart is that most are gay men who, beyond the rodeo events, stage drag performances and navigate complex relationships within their close-knit and often tense community. Dylan quickly integrates into their world and develops an attraction to Sky (Eve Lindley), who’s involved in an open relationship with Pepe (Rene Rosado). The film then follows this complicated romantic situation alongside Dylan's family struggles and his ambition to save money for a new SUV so he can travel. Plummer gives a genuinely powerful performance, and the cinematography beautifully showcases the vast landscapes. However, the narrative feels disappointingly conventional. It’s reminiscent of “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” but without much humor and evolving into a serious, slow-moving drama that loses momentum as it progresses. The film explores themes of love, desire, and acceptance, yet offers nothing particularly new or original compared to what's already been presented in numerous films. It seems the central storyline is deliberately kept separate from the unique element of the rodeo performers’ lifestyle. There was a sense it could have challenged expectations more significantly, but ultimately I felt let down.
