Peter Hyams made the choice to revisit one of cinema's most admired noir crime stories from the nineteen fifties, and when you think about it, the result is pretty decent. It doesn't come anywhere near the brilliance of Richard Fleischer’s original film from 1952, which was incredibly tense and confining. Casting Gene Hackman and Anne Archer as the main characters provides a solid starting point. As an employee of the district attorney and someone who saw a mob killing, both performers deliver for Hyams when they find themselves in a chase aboard a fast-moving train. The scenery outside offers some visual relief, but the tight spaces inside contribute to the suspense, with Hackman portraying composure while Archer expresses fear. The film doesn’t offer anything new regarding thriller tropes, and the plot's predictable elements prevent it from reaching a higher level of quality: characters still act foolishly – key information is disregarded too quickly – physics seem to be ignored, and so on. It’s welcome that Hyams avoided adding an overly sentimental romantic subplot, and his handling of suspenseful moments is quite effective. He has Hackman being remarkably calm, though. The film earns a 6.5 out of 10.
