Jon Heder portrays the central character, a high schooler sharing a home with his brother “Kip” (Aaron Ruell) and their grandmother (Sandy Martin). The grandmother, an enthusiast of off-road vehicles, has an accident while racing in the dunes, prompting their uncle "Rico" (Jon Gries), a salesman of plastic containers, to arrive bearing steak and assuming responsibility for them. Kip is deeply smitten with someone he met online; meanwhile, his brother—a somewhat isolated and awkward young man—focuses his attention on “Pedro” (Efren Ramirez), a new student at school, and resolves to assist him in winning the class presidency by overcoming "Summer" (Haylie Duff), the popular girl. While venturing beyond the often overly sweet nature of MTV movies, Heder delivers a decent performance as the somewhat naive but observant young man who finds himself increasingly drawn to “Deb” (Tina Majorino)—whose hair seems to defy gravity! There are moments that elicit amusement, however, I suspect this film hasn't stood the test of time particularly well. For viewers unfamiliar with American culture, the comedy has largely dissipated into a sequence of foreseeable scenarios and character types that may have seemed innovative two decades ago but now feel rather uninspired. The ninety-minute running time passes without much difficulty, accompanied by a soundtrack evoking nostalgia for Alphaville, Cyndi Lauper, and even "The A-Team," though I'm unlikely to revisit it.
