My actions were taken to ensure tranquility. Your conflict, like every war, celebrates ruin and loss of life. Mysterious Island is a free adaptation of the novel by Jules Verne. It’s from Columbia Pictures and was filmed at Shepperton Studios in England, with outdoor scenes shot along the coast of Spain. Cy Endfield directed, and Ray Harryhausen contributed his stop-motion animation to the creatures. The cast includes Michael Craig, Joan Greenwood, Michael Callan, Gary Merrill, Herbert Lom, Beth Rogan, Percy Herbert & Dan Jackson. Bernard Herrmann composed the musical score. The story follows three Union soldiers who escape from a Confederate prison camp during the American Civil War using a gas balloon. A Confederate soldier and a journalist are also swept up in this escape. As they struggle against the elements, they’re forced to make an emergency landing on what they believe is an island in the Pacific. There, they encounter enormous animals that threaten their lives. Later, two women are shipwrecked on the island as well, but the strange creatures aren't their only concern; the island's volcano is nearing eruption and it seems they might not be alone on the island. Although not one of the most significant fantasy adventure films, Mysterious Island is genuinely enjoyable despite its imperfections. The drama is acceptable, with the creatures being particularly memorable, but those looking for a science story that lives up to Jules Verne’s standards will likely be disappointed (though some scientific elements do appear later on). It's primarily an island survival movie featuring Harryhausen’s special effects. There's a pleasant sense of camaraderie as soldiers from opposing sides must work together to survive. The arrival of upper-class women does introduce a class difference, which is interesting, though not fully explored. Naturally, there are familiar tropes present, and while I enjoyed it as an adult male viewer, was it really necessary for Beth Rogan’s island dress to be so brief? And truthfully, some of the painted backgrounds and effects have aged better in our memories than they do on screen now. Wilkie Cooper's cinematography is pleasing, using Eastman Color and the Super-Dynamation process, but the film also suffers somewhat from restoration efforts. The existing DVD prints are marked by spots, fading, and scratches, and the higher resolution reveals flaws that weren’t noticeable before. Nevertheless, this remains a must-see for fans of fantasy adventure. Like many films featuring Harryhausen's work, the action sequences involving his creations add excitement to an otherwise episodic story. With giant animals trying to eat our survivors, a twist in line with Verne’s style towards the end, Herrmann's powerful score and Rogan's dress! Who cares about predictable storytelling? 7/10
