This movie shares a lot of DNA with films like “Earth Girls are Easy” and “Coneheads,” comedies from the eighties that embrace silliness. A scientist who’s recently lost his wife (played by Dan Aykroyd) makes first contact, which leads to an alien agent—Kim Basinger—being dispatched to see him. She carries a counselor shaped like a snake with one eye, and somehow ends up marrying the physicist, even though this counselor is secretly planning to destroy Earth (!). Alyson Hannigan portrays his charming daughter, while Jon Lovitz appears as the scientist’s bothersome brother. “My Stepmother Is an Alien,” released in 1988, feels like a relative of “Earth Girls are Easy.” While it doesn't quite reach that film's level and has a peculiar feeling about it, it’s much better than later movies like "2001: A Space Travesty" and "What Planet Are You From?" (both from 2000). I can’t say I’m a big fan of Basinger, but she manages to do comedy quite well, surprisingly so. This was the first movie role for Alyson Hannigan and Juliette Lewis, along with an early appearance for Seth Green. The parts played by the latter two are barely noticeable. Whoever penned the script seems to be inspired by Jimmy Durante. There’s a peculiar scene involving adult material that feels odd in what is otherwise intended as a wholesome family film; I don't really have strong feelings about its presence. The movie runs longer than it needs to, clocking in at 1 hour and 47 minutes. Filming took place around Studio City and other locations near Los Angeles. GRADE: B-/C+
