STX created a buzz when they decided to sell their film “My SPY” to Amazon, opting for a streaming release instead of waiting for theaters to fully recover and allow films to be profitable again. The movie features Dave Bautista as JJ, a C.I.A. agent. He’s a former Special Forces operative who transitioned to the agency after his military service ended. Following a mission that doesn't go according to plan, JJ’s boss, David Kim (Ken Jeong), questions whether he is suited for the necessary type of work. JJ is paired with an overly enthusiastic analyst named Bobbi (Kristen Schaal) to monitor Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley), a single mother, and her nine-year-old daughter Sophie (Chloe Coleman). Kate and Sophie recently relocated from Paris and are having difficulty adjusting. It appears that Sophie’s father was involved in various illicit activities, and JJ and Bobbi are observing them to see if he tries to get in touch with them; he is a central figure in an ongoing plutonium arms deal. The story takes an unexpected turn when the clever Sophie discovers their apartment is equipped with surveillance equipment, eventually locating it and confronting JJ and Bobbi. Reluctant to admit to his superiors that their cover was compromised by a nine-year-old, JJ quickly becomes Sophie’s friend as she insists he take her ice-skating and participate in a school career day, wanting to make friends after the move. This situation creates problems for Bobbi, who feels JJ should be teaching her about his work. Things become even more complicated by a budding connection between JJ and Kate, thanks to Sophie’s repeated efforts to bring them together. Although most viewers will likely anticipate what happens next, the appealing cast and their chemistry elevate the film beyond typical family comedies. Bautista does well playing around with his action-hero image, demonstrating his ability to blend comedy and action—something he previously showcased in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” While the movie doesn’t present many surprises, it delivers some very pleasant and enjoyable moments, with enough humor to make it a worthwhile experience for all ages. 3.5 stars out of 5
