Claire Foy portrays "Joan," and James McAvoy plays "Murray," whose dread intensifies when their young son, "Ethan," vanishes from a campsite nestled within the scenic Scottish Highlands’ forests and waterways. While “Insp. Roy” (Gary Lewis) heads the police investigation, "Murray" increasingly suspects his son's disappearance was intentional. His initial focus of suspicion falls on Joan's new boyfriend, "Frank" (Tom Cullen), but the reasons remain unclear. Given "Murray"'s history working in delicate situations internationally, a ransom plot becomes possible—or perhaps something far more dangerous. Foy and Cullen have limited screen time; essentially, this film hinges on McAvoy’s powerful depiction of a father consumed by anguish. The narrative feels disjointed rather than flowing smoothly, particularly considering the questionable believability of the final events unfolding in such an isolated area. A unique aspect is that McAvoy improvised his lines—though without prior knowledge, it wouldn't be apparent, and what he delivers doesn’t surpass typical profanity-laced dialogue from a less skilled thriller writer working on a shoestring budget; I found it difficult to become invested in the story. The cinematography also suffers; brighter lighting could have enhanced the film's visual appeal without harming its aesthetic. There are moments where McAvoy demonstrates why he’s successful in films, but otherwise, this feels like a standard television crime series that won’t leave a lasting impression.
