I’ve always thought of Barbara Stanwyck as the quintessential noir woman, but her films made before the Production Code, like 'Baby Face,' are truly remarkable, and I find her portrayals of vulnerability equally engaging for film lovers. It's a good choice if you appreciate dramatic or melodramatic stories from that time period—like the one about a woman whose overbearing mother prevents her from finding contentment because of societal expectations. There’s something relatable in this story even now, considering how much pressure we put on ourselves to conform and seek validation from others. The supporting actors were adequate rather than exceptional, and while director Bernhardt isn't among the most famous—my preference is 'Possessed,' starring Joan Crawford—he handled the material acceptably well. The production quality from Warner Brothers, including Max Steiner’s score and the beautiful cinematography by James Wong Howe, elevates this to a relatively obscure, overlooked treasure that could potentially appeal to viewers.
