It’s Elliott’s eighteenth birthday, and her parents, who are fans of "ET," have prepared a cake for her. However, she’s out with friends, camping and consuming some very strong mushroom tea. Suddenly, she finds herself sitting by a fire talking to a thirty-nine year old version of herself, portrayed by Aubrey Plaza. It seems like a hallucination, but this older self manages to give her a phone number and offer some advice about what’s to come with someone named "Chad." The following day, while swimming naked, she encounters him. There's an initial connection, but up until that point, “Elliott” identified as a lesbian and, guided by the cautionary words from her future self, decides it would be best to stay away from this young man. But can she? Should she? Director Megan Park has crafted something genuinely entertaining, using Elliott’s character to highlight the self-centeredness of youth – taking loved ones for granted, believing we possess all the answers and that no one else could possibly understand us. The dynamic between the two women, and eventually with the young man, might just help her realize the pleasures of being herself and embracing what's ahead, even if it’s going to be challenging. It prompts a question for everyone: If we knew our lives were headed toward failure, would we still follow our instincts or try to avoid risks? Stella delivers an engaging performance, and the brief scenes with the charming "Chad," played by Percy Hynes White, are quite humorous as well. While it does rely on some familiar tropes, those can sometimes be more impactful than we expect. It might not be a film for the big screen, but it’s considerably better than most teen angst movies and is worth seeing.
