What would you say if you could talk to yourself from years down the road? That's the unexpected chance given to 18-year-old Elliott (Maisy Stella), a young woman growing up on a Canadian cranberry farm who is about to leave for college in Toronto, marking a new phase she anticipates with some nervousness. To mark this occasion, Elliott and her two friends (Kerrice Brooks, Maddie Ziegler) decide to celebrate by trying magic mushrooms. During this altered state, Elliott unexpectedly encounters her 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza), who offers the teenager a glimpse into what’s ahead. A lot of their conversation revolves around things the younger version could improve upon, but perhaps most importantly, older Elliott warns her to stay away from a young man named Chad (Percy Hynes White). Not long after, though, Elliott meets this mysterious stranger, who happens to be working on the farm for the summer. She quickly finds herself drawn to his charm and wonders why her future self is so insistent that she avoid him, advice she promptly disregards. This naturally brings up questions like do we have to accept supposed prophecies without question? Is our future predetermined? And even if it’s supposedly fixed, should we blindly follow warnings or trust our instincts, regardless of the potential consequences? These are some of the ideas explored in writer-director Megan Park’s second film, a coming-of-age story with an unusual element, full of gentle humor, genuine emotion, insightful moments and several interesting discoveries. The movie is also beautifully shot in the scenic lake region around Muskoka, Ontario, which provides viewers with stunning landscapes reminiscent of “On Golden Pond” (1981). Despite these positives, the film feels a bit thin in places, especially when it comes to some of the supporting characters and side stories, as well as certain details about older Elliott’s life. Considering the movie's relatively short runtime of 1:29:00, it’s surprising that the filmmaker didn’t spend more time developing these aspects (it isn’t a long or boring film). Regardless, “My Old Ass” is an enjoyable and harmless way to spend some time at the cinema watching a heartwarming story with a sincere message about how to live our lives. And it's difficult to criticize that.
