John Chard on My Name Is Nobody

5/10 · Jan 11, 2014

Just because I didn't connect with it doesn't mean it isn't a worthwhile film. Il mio nome è Nessuno (My Name Is Nobody) comes from directors Tonino Valerii and Sergio Leone, with screenplay contributions by Leone, Fulvio Morsella and Ernesto Gastaldi. The cast includes Terence Hill, Henry Fonda and Jean Martin. Ennio Morricone composed the music, and Giuseppe Ruzzolini handled the cinematography. It’s a Spaghetti Western comedy that has a dedicated following among those who appreciate that style of film, but for someone just looking for an entertaining movie it feels overly eccentric and doesn't quite fit in anywhere. There's plenty of action, the direction, acting and visuals are all well done, and the humor, if you enjoy a silly kind of comedy, is abundant. Even Ennio Morricone’s music is distinctive and seems to match the film’s unusual tone. It touches on how the West was evolving, as well as changes happening within Western movies themselves. The filmmakers also frequently borrow from and pay tribute to earlier Western films. Ultimately, this one will probably only appeal to people who are already fans of the genre. 5/10
