John Chard on My Man Godfrey

10/10 · Apr 26, 2020

I’m looking at what feels like a room full of people who aren't thinking very much! Even if I were someone who analyzed every second of a movie searching for problems, I still wouldn’t find any with My Man Godfrey. It’s flawless cinema from a bygone era that we don’t often see anymore. The story revolves around a scavenger hunt among wealthy socialites, where the somewhat ditzy Irene Bullock wins by finding a forgotten man—a homeless person—and presenting him at their exclusive party. She's charmed by the charisma of Godfrey Parke, who is down on his luck, and hires him as a butler for her family. This naturally confuses them, especially when they discover that Godfrey is much more than he initially appears to be. My Man Godfrey is one of those older comedies with satire at its core; the filmmakers clearly target the wealthy, portraying them as clumsy fools. Godfrey, the hobo, possesses grace and good sense, qualities they would all do well to emulate. However, while the social commentary holds importance, it's the exceptional comedy that really stands out. The script is fantastic, thanks to everyone’s excellent work in bringing it to life on screen. William Powell plays Godfrey, delivering a superb performance—he never seems rattled as he delivers the humorous lines with sharp wit. Carole Lombard is delightful as the naive and lovesick Irene, making her scenes with Powell genuinely funny. My favorite character, though, is Eugene Pallette as Alexander, the patriarch of this strange family; every gesture and line had me laughing uncontrollably. I also have to note that considering the film received 6 Oscar nominations, it’s surprising there wasn't one for Gail Patrick as Cornelia—her portrayal is wickedly cold and sneaky, and she affected me so strongly that I wanted to throttle her; a job well done, truly impressive work from her. The truth is, everyone involved is excellent, from the actors to the director, the editor, and the writer. My Man Godfrey is a genuinely brilliant film that has easily made its way into my top 100 films of all time. 10/10
