barrymost on My Man Godfrey

9/10 · Oct 4, 2019

A chance encounter between a down-and-out wanderer and a frivolous socialite sparks what many consider to be one of the wittiest and most charming comedies in film history. William Powell portrays Godfrey, the homeless man, with impeccable skill. Carole Lombard is wonderful as Irene Bullock, though her performance occasionally veers into extravagance, embodying the role of an affluent woman seeking someone from a less privileged background. What begins as a simple game around the city evolves into an unexpected connection when Irene brings Godfrey home and secures him a position as their new butler. Godfrey disrupts the family’s established order (almost unintentionally), which displeases Irene's formal parents, played by Eugene Pallette and Alice Brady. It’s unfortunate that so many contemporary viewers, accustomed to commonplace, effects-laden movies, may find it hard to appreciate a film like this due to its distinctive flair and cleverness. This screwball comedy, containing an underlying theme, is well worth seeing. Recommended by P.M. Turner of Old Hat Cinema.
