What an absolute buffoon! This second installment of three films spun off from the well-loved British sitcom, On the Buses, surprisingly emerges as the strongest of the bunch. However, this might not register with anyone unfamiliar with the show’s style or those who find older movies lacking in modern sensitivities. Following the trend of sex-themed comedies that arose in 1970s Britain, Mutiny on the Buses finds its bus depot employees, driven by lust, clashing with a new management team intent on actually running a bus company! This leads to an uprising as everyone tries to thwart the schemes of Inspector Blakey (Stephen Lewis) and Mr. Jenkins (Kevin Brennan). What unfolds amidst the kissing and touching – along with some not-so-subtle suggestive remarks – are familiar slapstick routines played for lively laughs, with a fire drill training exercise escalating into complete silliness being particularly memorable. It’s easy to overlook that this film offers a worthwhile glimpse into the past for those who experienced it firsthand. The tight living spaces, attitudes toward sex, and job losses due to layoffs are all present, even though they're portrayed humorously. There's also the transition from old, unreliable buses to newer models – with engines in the back! – alongside some charming folk remedies for snoring. Sure, there’s mild suggestive content (it’s far from the level of explicitness found in films like "Confessions Of" or "Adventures Of"), and a faint whiff of sexism (though the women are shown taking charge here), but time changes things, and so does nostalgia. Mutiny on the Buses is enjoyable entertainment with a knowing glance back at early 1970s Britain. It gets a 7/10.
