CinemaSerf on Mutiny on the Bounty

This is an exceptionally well-done version of the tale concerning Royal Navy Captain Bligh (played by Charles Laughton), who was sent on a voyage to gather breadfruit trees—intended as inexpensive food for enslaved people in the Caribbean—and, through his harsh methods, pushed his hungry and dehydrated crew toward mutiny, spearheaded by Lieutenant Christian (a very appealing Clark Gable). I thought Franchot Tone’s portrayal of "Byam" was handsome but lacked expressiveness, and Gable's accent might be best ignored; however, the high production values and superb seafaring cinematography demonstrate what could be achieved even without digital effects. The score by Herbert Stothard is stirring, and there’s a strong ensemble cast—particularly Ian Wolfe’s work as the unpleasant ship’s clerk "Maggs" and Herbert Mundin's rather unfortunate "Smith"—which contributes to the story’s richness, adding a touch of humor and considerable flair while they contend with both the dangers of the ocean and the cruelty of a tyrant. Because it is based on actual events, there isn't much room for suspense in the plot itself, but Laughton is completely believable as someone you wouldn't want to provoke.
