It seems like after a period where Kenneth Branagh seemed more like a hired hand in the movie industry, I think he’s started making films that feel truly his own. He's acted and directed numerous projects over the years, with mixed results. For quite some time, it didn’t appear many of them were labors of love. For instance, his work on **THOR** was clearly guided by Kevin Feige, who runs Marvel Films. I would say that **MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS** is a personal project. It seems like he wanted to build an Agatha Christie universe in the same way someone might construct a Marvel one. Now, he’s released a second installment, **DEATH ON THE NILE**, and there are still dozens of Hercule Poirot novels that could be adapted. A third film probably won't happen unless this one does well. **ORIENT EXPRESS** didn't exactly set the world on fire – it received a fairly indifferent response from both audiences and critics who didn’t find it particularly good or bad. However, I really like it. I think this classic story, presented with modern filmmaking techniques, is lovely, enjoyable, and entertaining. It manages to feel charming and intimate even when elaborate computer-generated backgrounds create the impressive scenery. I'd happily watch it again and again. The film’s beautiful visuals are complemented by a score from Patrick Doyle, who is a friend and musical collaborator of Branagh’s. They work well together; Doyle’s bold and forceful music perfectly matches Branagh’s sincere storytelling style. It’s rarely quiet. Beginning with **MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING**, Branagh likes to cast big names, and this film might be the ultimate example of that approach. Every performer is a top-tier actor and each gets at least one chance to really ham it up. There's no question that this story showcases Hercule Poirot; Branagh’s portrayal of the Belgian detective is quite fun, starting with what I consider one of the best character introductions in recent years. Based on reviews and box office numbers, there's a good chance you might not like Branagh's **MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS**. To be honest, many of the negative comments I’ve read come from people comparing it to the 1974 version with a huge cast. Those viewers would prefer that you watch that older film (where you probably won’t recognize most of the actors).
