A little outside Milan, high up in the mountains of northern Italy, a group of six individuals find themselves unexpectedly spending an evening within a rather unsettling manor house situated near a cemetery. The property's owner entertains them with stories about vampires and ghosts, referencing figures like the mansion’s elderly female head and her large-framed driver. “Murder Mansion,” originally known as “The Mansion in the Fog” when it was first released in Spanish (1972), is a mystery/horror film that fits into the giallo category. It shares similarities with films such as "The Devil's Nightmare" and "The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave," both from the year before, and would go on to influence “The Vampires Night Orgy” and “Count Dracula’s Great Love,” which were released shortly afterward. This film feels like a Scooby-Doo adventure, complete with a Fred (played by Andrés Resino) and two characters resembling Daphnes – Lisa Leonardi as Laura and Analía Gadé as Elsa – though lacking the other familiar personalities. The difference is that these versions of Fred and the two Daphnes are roughly twelve to fifteen years older than their counterparts from Scooby-Doo. It’s not a movie aimed at children, however; there's material intended for adult audiences, like Mr. Porter frequently making unwanted advances toward the attractive women present, as well as the romantic connection between Fred and Elsa, who begin as strangers to one another. It simply avoids explicit nudity or excessive bloodshed. The film’s strongest points are the atmospheric elements: the pervasive fog, the nearby graveyard, the mysterious manor itself, its gothic decorations, the occult artwork, and the unsettling rumors whispered quietly. The plot does rely on a degree of improbable events, but if you're willing to overlook that, it provides what it promises. The running time is 1 hour and 26 minutes. Filming primarily took place in a studio in Madrid, Spain, with some scenes shot in Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha—approximately 40 miles northeast of the city—for the opening sequence. GRADE: B
