Mike Colter is an actor I appreciate; he possesses talent and commands attention. Nevertheless, I struggled to connect with Murder City. The narrative felt overwhelmingly bleak and somber throughout its duration. Contributing to this was a sense of familiarity—it seemed like a concept that’s already been explored extensively. There wasn't anything particularly fresh or inventive about it, as far as I could tell; just crime depicted in the setting of an average American city. The performances ranged from quite good to merely passable. The characters felt somewhat predictable and reliant on familiar tropes—like the “drunken gambler father,” for instance. Essentially, this type of film has been replicated so many times that it’s become a cliché itself. Consequently, any new entry in this area requires some attention to detail and a spark of originality to distinguish it from the commonplace.
